Gambling Awareness - "Game Changer"

At RCT we are proud to be launching a ”Communities Against Harm from Gambling” funded service to provide supportive interventions for those individuals affected by problem gambling and for those living with family members who are engaged in problem gambling.

Over half the population has participated in some form of gambling in the past year. Gambling is often portrayed as a leisure activity however can cause harm for those who are experiencing or are at risk of a gambling addiction.

In Rochdale we are starting to think differently about gambling by working to prevent and reduce the negative impacts of gambling on individuals, families and communities. Harms associated with gambling include mental ill health, relationship breakdown, poor performance at work or school and financial difficulties. These harms may be experienced by the person who gambles or by family, friends and colleagues of someone who gambles. Harms can accrue very quickly, but we know that recovery can take a long time.

At RCT we are launching our Game Changer programme in an effort to tackle these harms experienced by those who gamble and anyone affected by gambling.
Game Changer will focus on providing help and support to deal with the issue of problem gambling. It will include delivery of group and 1:1 sessions by a qualified Counsellor and course Facilitator, who possesses lived experience and specialises in supporting those affected by gambling. Our In-house Counselling service is being adapted to offer tailored therapeutic counselling interventions that help to reinforce learnings from the programme and clients will be able to access this service simultaneously.

We will engage and collaborate with other specialist services, such as Debt Advice and other Gambling support services to develop a bespoke package of support for each individual client.
We will also aim to engage with family members who have been adversely affected by a loved ones gambling problem and ensure their voice is heard and their needs are met.
In addition, we will aim to provide access to and encourage engagement in positive free time activities that promote both physical and mental health and wellbeing, to lessen the likelihood of clients becoming re-engaged in gambling.

Rochdale Connections Trust is taking referrals for its programme, Game Changer, which will run from 17 January.
Consisting of three elements, the programme will work with those with a gambling problem or addiction, provide a service for those living with a problem gambler, and provide an awareness-raising service. This last service will be aimed at young people and others who are susceptible to the marketing techniques of online gaming sites and bookmakers.
The programme will be led by a former gambler, who has lived experience of an acute gambling addiction, which he overcame 7 years ago. With a unique level of understanding of the issue, he now works to help others who are affected and to campaign for greater protections to be put in place for people.

Programme funded by Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA).
