International Womens Day 2022

Rochdale Connections Trusts’ International Women's Day celebration event this year was a huge success. After 2 years where the celebration has had to be cancelled it was wonderful to have a live event in our building. We were fortunate to have two inspirational speakers, Rae Street and Professor Erinma Bell MBE, who shared with us their very different stories of courage and standing up and being counted for something they believe in.

Professor Erinma Bell MBE is a peace activist who is renowned for her work tackling gun crime in Moss Side and Longsight. Erinma was honoured in 2017 with a sculpture designed by Manchester artist, Karen Lyons, which was made out of 50 lethal firearms seized by the Police or surrendered during gun amnesty’s. Erinma is an Honorary Professor at the University of Salford, a Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester and was awarded the MBE for voluntary services to her community in 2008.

The event was fittingly closed with a short speech by Olga Kurtianyk, who is the Chair of the Ukrainian Association in Rochdale. She thanked everyone for the love and support provided to her and the people of Ukraine during this terrible time and provided details of how we can donate to the appeal.
Rae, from Littleborough, has been arrested, travelled the world and camped out on an RAF base, all in the name of peace. A relentless campaigner, Rae has spent almost 4 decades fighting to raise awareness of the devastating impact of nuclear weapons and calling for disarmament. She was a part of the famous Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp; the anti-nuclear protest that spanned almost 20 years.

There was a huge turn-out, with an audience which consisted of service-users’, local Councillors, staff from the Local Authority, a group of students from Falinge Park High School, PCSO’s and representatives from other faith and community groups. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed listening to our speakers and celebrating the crucial role that women play in society. The theme this year was Break the Bias and attendees were asked to make pledges about how they can realistically challenge the status quo.

One Billion Rising 2020

Thank you to all the people that came today to dance and help us take part in the One Billion Rising campaign.
It was touching to have our MP Tony Lloyd join us and give an inspiring speech. Next year he has promised to join in the dancing. I am sure you will all agree we have some fabulous dancers 😊
This is a global mass action initiative that takes place on 14th February with the aim of highlighting that 1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime – that equates to 1 billion women and girls – and we are proud to demonstrate our solidarity and to help raise awareness by “rising” to show we are determined, in Rochdale, to play our part and to help create a world where violence is no longer acceptable.

Weekly Column: Mayor Mohammed Zaman

Rochdale Connections Trust (RCT) is one of many organisations that we are proud to have in Rochdale. They carry out so much amazing work with young people, to help improve their lives.

I attended RCT’s volunteer and young people celebration evening, where I presented certificates and awards to young people who had improved their life chances from 1:1 mentoring support provided by the charity.

Thank you to RCT for all the work that they do within the borough, especially the youth intervention work that provides a brighter future for our next generation.

Our CEO, Kathy Thomas and Operation's Manager, Jane Honeyford are at GM Police Headquarters participating in a briefing session for Operation Encompass. This initiative involves the Police notifying Schools the next morning if an incident of Domestic Abuse has occurred in the family home overnight where a chid is present.
